OCR GCSE (9-1) Business 1BSO
Course Background:
This course is for learners aged 14—16 who wish to develop a knowledge in entrepreneurship and business. The qualification gained enables students to develop as commercially minded and enterprising individuals.
Course Content:
All learners will study two themes.
- Theme 1: Investigating small business
- Theme 2: Building a business
Theme 1 is studied during year 10 and theme 2 in year 11.
Units of Work:
Theme 1
- Enterprise and entrepreneurship
- Spotting a business opportunity
- Putting a business idea into practice
- Making the business effective
- Understanding external influences on business
Theme 2
- Growing the business
- Making marketing decisions
- Making operational decisions
- Making financial decisions
- Making human resource decisions
Teaching and learning approaches
There will be opportunities to discuss, analyse, and participate in small, collaborative group work; develop presentational and interpersonal skills, including presenting to small audiences; reflect and review your own performance and that of others; and use online materials.
Homework
Extended research homework tasks are normally set at the start of each term, class teachers will then set smaller tasks as necessary as the term progresses.
Homework will also be centred around exam based questions.
Assessment:
- Paper 1 1BSO/01 (Theme 1) 50%
- Paper 2 1BSO/02 (Theme 2) 50%
Both papers will consist of calculations, multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.
The Future
The department offers a range of post-16 qualifications, including Business AS/A2, Cambridge Technical Level 3 Business. Students from Berwick Academy have been inspired to pursue further study of IT, computing and business subjects at leading Universities.
