Careers Education, Information and Guidance

Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) at Berwick Academy

Welcome to our Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) webpage. We believe that CEIAG is a vital part of every child's education. A high-quality careers curriculum seeks to empower every young person with the knowledge and skill that enables them to make positive choices about their future. We achieve this by ensuring CEIAG here at Berwick Academy continually strives to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks.

The eight Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance are:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

(For further information on the Gatsby Benchmarks please visit https://www.gatsby.org.uk/education/focus-areas/good-career-guidance )

Our work to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks through our CEIAG program here at Berwick Academy ensures that;

 “Pupils receive the careers information and guidance they need to make well-informed choices about their future.” Ofsted Feb 2024

Provider Access and the Baker Clause

An essential part of Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) at Berwick Academy is ensuring that our students have access to high quality information about the variety of possible next steps available to them. Much of that information is delivered to students firsthand by visiting colleges, universities and local employers.

The Baker Clause - All pupils are entitled:

  • to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
  • to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events;
  • to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

Examples of how we meet the Baker clause

  • Visiting guest speakers from a range of colleges and universities running assemblies and workshops for students throughout the year
  • Our monthly careers breakfasts provide local employers the opportunity to deliver to students, explaining the opportunities they have to offer
  • Colleges invited to our post 16 options evening and information relating to their open events is shared with parents and students
  • Trips and visits to local employers take place as part of a number of our courses
  • Virtual work experience allows national employers to present to students, explaining the opportunities they have to offer
  • UCAS fairs introduce students to universities, apprenticeship providers and employers
