Chemistry
Course Information
AQA 7405 A-level Chemistry
Chemistry is seen as a very desirable qualification to have, and can be a requirement for studying subjects such as Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at University.
A-level Chemistry is split into :
Physical Chemistry – studies the physical characteristics, or properties, of molecules. By understanding these properties, you learn more about the way in which molecules are put together, as well as how the actual structure of a chemical is impacted by these properties.
Organic Chemistry - studies the structure, properties and reactions of organic compounds, which contain carbon-carbon covalent bonds.
Inorganic Chemistry - the study of the inorganic or organometallic compound synthesis, structure, and behaviour. Many products in common use today, eg catalysts, coatings, fuels, surfactants, fibres, superconductors, and drugs, are researched and developed using inorganic chemistry.
Chemistry is an experimental subject, and practical skills are developed throughout the course. Students also develop analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as communication.
Chemistry complements the study of Biology and / or Physics at A-level. Students who are considering a Science degree are advised to study two sciences, and maths.
Students should expect to complete 4 to 5 hours of self-study each week, in addition to lessons.
Entry Criteria: You will need to achieve at least grade 6-6 in your GCSE Combined Science, as well as grade 5s in English and Maths.
Assessment
The A Level is assessed in Year 13 through three 2 hour written exams. Students will have to demonstrate their practical competencies across five skills to achieve the practical endorsement. This is reported separately by the exam board and, although essential, does not form part of the overall grade.
